NSF

NSF Certified Surfacing Materials

NSF International sets public health standards for products used in food, water, healthcare, and consumer industries. Materials that meet these standards can display the NSF certification mark, signaling they’ve passed rigorous testing for safety and performance.

Why It Matters

For solid surface materials, NSF certification ensures:

  • Toxicological safety

  • Smooth, non-porous surfaces

  • Easy cleaning

  • Corrosion resistance

  • Zone-specific food contact compliance

This means more safety, more durability, and more peace of mind—especially for food prep and healthcare environments.

Microban

Antimicrobial Options

Some of our laminate surfaces are treated with Microban® antimicrobial protection—helping reduce bacteria growth and keeping surfaces cleaner between cleanings.

Other

Antibacterial Properties

Decorative laminates are often used in kitchens, on tabletops, and in areas where food and children are present. That’s why antibacterial protection is critical—it helps reduce bacterial growth on frequently touched surfaces.

A common testing standard is ISO 22196:2007, based on JIS Z2801 (Japan). This test uses two bacteria: E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Some manufacturers take it further, testing additional bacteria or replacing Staph. with its drug-resistant strain, MRSA.

Different countries may use additional bacteria in testing, depending on regional health concerns.

Anti-Fungal Standards

Anti-fungal properties aren't always standard, but they add another layer of safety.

  • ASTM G21-09 is a widely accepted standard.

  • Maica Laminates uses this test for certification.

  • Formica (South America) partners with Microban for added microbial protection.

Fire Resistance & Flame Retardance

Fire safety is crucial in building materials. Standards vary globally, but many countries recognize:

  • BS 476, Parts 6 and 7 (Commonwealth countries)

  • ASTM standards (United States)

These tests ensure laminates meet fire code requirements for commercial and residential use.

Evolving Safety Testing

As technology evolves, so do safety standards. New tests may include:

  • Surface-to-food substance transfer

  • Chemical emission tracking

  • Country-specific safety requirements

These advancements help ensure consumer safety across different environments.

Green Certifications

Laminates can also be eco-friendly. Two respected certifications include:

  • MAS Certified Green

  • GREENGUARD & GREENGUARD Gold (formerly GREENGUARD for Children & Schools)

These ensure low chemical emissions, including VOCs and formaldehyde, based on ANSI/ASHRAE 62.1-2007 indoor air quality standards.

Other certifications include the Singapore Green Label, recognized by the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN).
